Physical Damp Proof Courses
Physical Damp proof courses or Physical DPC’s are used to prevent capillary action in the same way as Chemical DPC’s but instead of using chemical injection as a barrier to bricks above it, we use a high strength plastic. This is obviously a longer lasting and more resilient method but the cons are that it is more expensive and causes a lot more disruption due to having to saw into the existing mortar bed between the bricks.
Most houses were built with physical DPC’s installed but instead of using plastics, slate was used. Over decades, movement in walls along with deterioration of building materials causes the slate to crack in places which allows the moisture passage up the walls. All modern houses now utilise a plastic physical DPC during the build process which has been proven to last longer with more resilience. We are able to assess your property for breakdown of an existing DPC and advise on the best course of action to cure any further problems.
